Entry Visa
New international students must apply for a student visa (X1 or X2) with the official document (JW201 or JW202 form) and the Admission Notice, which both are issued by the university. Please check with the local Chinese embassies and consulates for any additional documents.
X1 Visa is for students who intend to study in China for a period of more than 180 days.
X2 Visa is for students who intend to study in China for a period of no more than 180 days.
International students who study in Shanghai must obtain an X visa (X1 or X2) before entry. All the other types of visa are not accepted.
Students holding non-study visa or residence permit, such as tourist visa, business visa, working visa and private affairs visa cannot transfer it to student visa or study-purpose residence permit in Shanghai. Students have to leave China first and obtain an X1 or X2 visa before entry.
Nationals who have the visa-free entry must also apply for an X visa (X1 or X2) before entry. X visa is the only visa type which can be transferred to student residence permit.
Students with diplomatic or public service passport should switch their passport to ordinary passport and apply for student residence permit after being admitted.
Medical Check
All international students who will stay in China for more than 6 months must apply for the residence permit on the condition that they have passed the medical check done at the authorized hospital.
If you have done the medical check at the hospital in your own country, please bring all the original documents for verification. In some cases, you might be required to do an additional check for some items.
There is no need for a re-examination when the residence permit is renewed, but if the last residence permit has been expired for more than three months, a medical check is still required before processing the new residence permit.
Before the Check-up (verification), students should make an online reservation.
Medical examination report is valid for 6 months only.
The International Students Office organizes a group medical examination at the beginning of each semester. Details of the arrangements will be shared upon registration. If students miss this chance, they will have to make their own appointment and do the medical check at Shanghai International Travel Health Care Center on their own.

Residence Permit Application
X1 visa is issued to students who study for more than 180 days (one semester). X1 visa avail you to stay in China for 30 days only, and students must switch it to residence permit within 30 days.

Procedures of residence permit application
Any students who live off campus need to apply for the Registration of Temporary Residence at the local police station with the contract signed with the householder within 72 hours;
Students can get visa application form, introduction letter and admission notice from International Student Office;
Students need to go to Exit-Entry Administration Division of Shanghai Public Security Bureau with passport, all the documents and application fees;
Notice
Students will be charged by Shanghai Public Security Bureau if they fail to apply for the residence permit within valid date;
If any information (e.g. passport number, address) of the residence permit is changed, students need to report to Exit-Entry Administration Division within 10 days. If they fail to do so, they might be charged;
Residence permit fee: the fee for a residence permit within one year (less than 365 days) is RMB 400, residence permit fee for one to three years is RMB 800.
Re-entry Visa Application:
X2 visa is issued to students who study for less than half a year. As a single entry visa, it does not allow students to re-enter into China without a new visa. Students who need more entry have to apply for a new X2 visa at least 3 weeks before the travelling date. Medical check is not needed. Only ONE more entry per semester is allowed.

Procedures of Re-entry visa application
Students need to report to International Student Office at least 3 weeks ahead of the travelling date and get the visa application form, introduction letter and admission notice from International Student Office;
Any students who live off campus need to apply for the Registration of Temporary Residence permit at the local police station with the rent contract signed with the householder within 72 hours;
Students need to go to Exit-Entry Administration Division of Shanghai Public Security Bureau with passport, all the documents and application fees;
Notice
Students with X2 visa don’t need to apply for new visa or residence permit if they don’t want to enter China again within the valid periods.
Students with X2 visa need to apply for residence permit if they will stay in China more than 6 months.
Students with X2 visa who study in China for less than half a year cannot switch to residence permit.
To apply for one more entry with X2 visa, the fee depends on different conditions or countries. On most conditions, X2 visa fee is 168 RMB.
Provisions for Renewal of Visas and Residence permits
All full-time international students (both degree and non-degree program students) must hold a student visa or study residence permit while studying. Non-student visa or residence permit such as working visa, or family visa are not acceptable.
The students holding the residence permit under the name of other institutions need to apply for the residence permit of our university within one week after registration.
Before the end of each semester, continuing students need to extend their residence permit.
For non-degree program students:
To extend the visa or residence permit, you need to clear the tuition balance first. Usually in the 15th week of each semester, the notice of extension will be shared.
If you pay for one semester, your visa/residence permit will be extended for another 6 months.
If you pay for one academic year, your residence permit will be extended for another year. The residence permit should not be longer than 1 year.
For degree program students:
For bachelor degree students, your resident permit will be renewed annually for the first two years and extended for two years at the third year.
For master and Ph.D. students, you will have one year residence permit at the first year and two-year residence permit at the second year.
Those who cannot graduate on time and need to extend the study period need pay the tuition and apply for residence permit extension according to the new period of study.
Extensions of visas or residence permits are not permitted on any of the following circumstances:
Attendance below 75 per cent;
Cheat in examinations;
The presence of drug users and drug traffickers;
Those who have committed other violations of public security regulations and are punished by public security organs;
Those who have been expelled from school.
Under any of the following circumstances, shall the university notify the Entry-Exit Bureau that the student visa or residence permit shall be invalidated:
Those who, without permission, have not attended classes for more than one week.
Those who cannot be reached by usual contact ways
Those who have been ordered to drop out in violation of school regulations.
Procedures of Recovering Passport and Residence Permit
If passport is lost, students should report to the local police and the International Students Office within 24 hours.
Go to Shanghai Entry-Exit Bureau with passport lost report issued by local police office.
Apply for the new passport in your embassy in China.
Go to Shanghai Entry-Exit Bureau to recover the residence permit with new passport and the documents issued by the International Students Office.
Regulations and Notice
Usually at the start of every semester, the university arranges a group visa/resident permit application (transportation is provided). If students miss it, they need to handle the visa/resident permit application on their own.
Students who complete their study must leave China before the expire date of the visa or residence permit.
Students who apply to terminate or suspend their study, or get expulsion must cancel the residence permit in time. If they fail to do so, their stay in China might be regarded illegal.
